I read the book to come up with some ideas about how I can have an event to mark the beginning of his transition from boyhood to manhood. This book helped me develop some ideas and explore this idea and I think it'd do the same for you. The ceremony was meaningful on many levels. As men, it is often difficult to share struggles, anxieties or fears. Bringing men through a series focused on molding their sons to be God fearing, honorable men sharpens the men and the boys. What a privilege it has been to join this group of men as WE endeavor to honor God in how we raise our modern day knights.
I finished this book feeling discouraged. Not only will I not get to enjoy many of these things with my father , but I honestly have no clue how I would implement many of the ideas given for my son. I realize that the book was written 25 years ago and things have greatly changed even in that relatively short period of time. I just don’t know how to make it happen. Creating a Coat of Arms that depicts you and your sons’ commitment to biblically-based manhood can generate great conversations about what real men are and what they represent. In the book Raising a Modern-Day Knight, the author Robert Lewis mentions the importance of creating a symbol or crest that represents you and your son vision of manhood.

Dad’s, uncles, grandfathers, pastors, youth pastor’s, read this book and be inspired to change a young man’s life. To give him direction, a code of conduct, a mission to fight, and a cause to fight for.
This book Opened my eyes to a need in christian america today. I would recommend it to any man with children or, thinking of having children. If you are not any of those things, this might not be the parenting book for you.
Raising a Young Modern-Day Princess
I was also stricken by the power of ceremony and rites of passage and their nearly complete absence in modern America. We have fallen so far away and don't even realize it. It brought tears to my eyes about my own childhood and underscored both my duty to raise my sons and my startling lack of knowledge or preparation on how to do that.
God has given us a wonderful son, we are blessed, but we also want to do all we can, that God calls us to do, to help him as he transitions to manhood. May I challenge you to invest in your sons and teach them how to be a Modern Day Knight in our technology driven society. Our journey initially led us to A Family Guide of Biblical Holidays. There are lots of other areas that I took note of, specifically leveraging other men to formally assist in raising your son. The only mention of a gay person is someone who, oh what a disgrace! It had some encouraging tips, but mostly impractical stories of what he did in his atypical setting. Only a knight can raise a knight brings about self-doubt in the reader. Might read it again later when my stepson is older but it was useless for me now. Then it proceeds to say that boys need to have ceremonies/rights of passage to manhood and celebrate their masculinity which is being smothered by feminism. Pleasantly void of any "taking back American Christianity from effeminate culture" language, this book is not about raising up your son to be a 'Manly Man'. It's a book about the importance of teaching your son values in a way that he hears them and they take root in his character.
In this book, the author shares that no one ever told him when he officially became a man or what it meant. He and his friends were inspired to create an experience for their sons, akin to the journey a boy took to become a knight. This book shares their story, examples of what they did, and ways that you could do the same.

They have formed a fellowship with which to hold each other accountable – to create moments together where rites of passage can be documented and boys can turn into men through ceremonies and training. The author's larger point about being proactive and 'strategic' fathers is well taken, and there are lots of good practical suggestions to help raise boys into 'authentic' men. I ordered this book as a mom of 3 boys.
A group of guys met from our church, and really from our community. The group setting was pretty informal. I think for Raising a Modern Day Knight — they actually watched the video series and worked through the journal that accompanies the book. Robert Lewis’ book was excellent and I can’t wait to start to partner with other dads, raising boys to men.
